"Love Is A Devil declares "Sir" Oliver Mally, an Austrian guitarist and songwriter whose solo album touches on singer-songwriter narratives ("Billy") in addition to mellow blues material (the jaunty "Lovin` Blues" and "I Don`t Care At All", which suggests John Hurt, or the syncopated, Delta-style "See Me..." and "Sunshine, Sunshine" and the occasional lilting, pop-hued ballad ("You Ain`t Nothing Special"). Mally`s lyrics are excellent, his singing is wonderful unaffected, and his fingerpicking is crisp.
His sole concession to strumming chords occurs on a surprising, brilliantly imagined acoustic reworking of AC/DC`s "It`s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock`n`Roll)", itself worth the price of admission.
